HTML to Markdown Converter

Paste HTML code, or copy part of a web page, and get tidy Markdown

The result appears here as you type or paste.

Converted in this browser tab. Nothing leaves your device and nothing is kept unless you choose “Open in Markdown editor”.

From HTML to Markdown without the clutter

Paste HTML code, open an .html file, or simply copy part of a web page and paste it here: the box takes the page’s HTML. The Markdown appears as you go, with headings, lists, links, tables and code blocks in GitHub style, and scripts, styles and layout clutter left behind. Copy it, or download a .md file.

How it works

  1. Bring the HTML. Paste code, open an .html file, or copy a part of a web page and paste it: the box receives the page’s HTML.
  2. Check the Markdown. It updates as you change the HTML or the options; the Preview tab shows how it reads.
  3. Copy or download. Copy for a README, a wiki or a note app; Download Markdown for a .md file.

To keep working on the result, “Open in Markdown editor” moves it to the Markdown editor with a live preview. The opposite direction is Markdown to HTML.

What Markdown cannot hold

  • Styling: colours, fonts, sizes, classes and inline styles are dropped; underline and highlight keep only their words.
  • Layout: columns, cards and menus turn into plain text in reading order. Copy just the article for a cleaner result.
  • Merged table cells and tables inside tables come out flattened.
  • Forms, videos, frames and scripts are left out entirely.
  • Heading levels 4 to 6 are kept as ####, but many tools style them like ordinary text.

Questions

How do I convert HTML to Markdown?

Paste the HTML into the box, or open an .html file. The Markdown tab fills in as you type and Preview shows how it reads. Copy takes the Markdown to the clipboard; Download Markdown saves a .md file named after the page title.

Can I copy from a web page instead of its source code?

Yes. Select part of any page in your browser, copy it and paste it here: a copy carries the formatted HTML along with the text, and the converter uses that HTML. No need to open the page source.

What happens to tables?

They become GitHub-style pipe tables, with the first row as the header. Line breaks inside a cell become <br>, and a | in a cell is escaped. Merged cells cannot be written in Markdown, so their content stays in the first cell.

What does the converter leave out?

Scripts, style sheets, forms, frames and embedded media, plus colours, fonts, classes and other styling: Markdown has no way to say them. Underlined and highlighted text keeps its words without the effect.

Inline links or reference links?

Inline puts the address right after the link text: [text](https://…). Reference keeps the text readable by numbering the links, [text][1], and listing the addresses at the end. Both mean the same to every Markdown tool.

Are pictures kept?

Pictures with a web address stay as ![description](address). Pictures embedded in the HTML as data: URLs are saved as files: the download becomes a .zip with the .md file and an images folder the Markdown links to.
