Plain text or a .txt file as a Word document, line breaks your way
The result appears here as you type or paste.
Converted in this browser tab. Nothing leaves your device and nothing is kept unless you choose “Open in text editor”.
Plain text into a Word document
Paste plain text or bring in a .txt file, and download it as a Word (.docx) document. Each line becomes a paragraph, or lines broken by hand are joined back into flowing paragraphs. Pick Georgia or a monospaced font and A4 or Letter. Nothing leaves this browser tab, so the text stays private.
How to convert text to Word
- Add the text. Paste it, or bring in a .txt file with Open file.
- Decide on the lines. Leave them as they are, or tick Join wrapped lines when the text was broken at a fixed width.
- Download as Word. The .docx is built in the tab and saved to your downloads.
For text that needs headings, lists or bold words, write it in the online word editor and download it as Word from there. To keep editing plain text, “Open in text editor” moves it to the text editor. Need a PDF instead? Use Text to PDF.
What to expect in the Word file
- No styling is invented: a line that looks like a title stays a normal paragraph, and *asterisks* stay asterisks.
- Tabs are kept as tab characters, so they follow Word’s tab stops rather than the editor you came from.
- Joining lines keeps list items, indented lines and empty lines apart; a line that should have joined but starts with a dash or a number stays on its own.
- Very long files convert fully, but the preview shows the first 2,000 lines.

Questions
How do I turn a text file into a Word document?
Bring the .txt file in with Open file or by dragging it onto the converter, or paste the text. Check the page preview, choose the font and paper, and press Download as Word. The .docx keeps the name of the text file.
Will my line breaks stay where they are?
By default every line of the text becomes a paragraph of its own, and empty lines stay empty. If the text was broken at a fixed width, as e-mails and terminal output often are, tick Join wrapped lines and each paragraph flows again.
Can the Word file keep a monospaced layout?
Tick Monospaced font and the whole text is set in Consolas, so spaces line up the same way they did in Notepad. Runs of spaces and tabs are written into the file as they are.
Which font and page size does the document use?
Georgia at 12 point, or Consolas with Monospaced font ticked, on A4 or Letter paper with one-inch margins. The text uses Word’s Normal style, so a different font for the whole document is one style change in Word.
Are old Notepad files with accents read correctly?
Yes. UTF-8 and UTF-16 files are recognised, and files Notepad saved as ANSI are read as Windows-1252, so é, £ and “curly quotes” arrive intact. The converter says when a file was not UTF-8.
Can I add headings or bold text before converting?
Not in plain text, which has no formatting. Either write the text as Markdown (# for a heading, **bold**) and use the Markdown to Word converter, or write it in the online word editor and download it from there.
