Plain text, nothing added

This online text editor works with plain text only: no fonts or styles, just characters in a monospaced face with line numbers. Open a .txt, .csv, .log or .json file from your computer, change it, and download it again as .txt. Everything stays in your browser; nothing leaves your device and no account is needed.

How it works

  1. Open or paste. Use Open (Ctrl+O) or drop a file on the page to load it as it is, or paste text into the empty file that is waiting.
  2. Edit. Type as in any text editor. Ctrl+F finds and replaces; Tab inserts a tab, and with several lines selected it indents them.
  3. Save. Changes are kept in your browser as you type. Download, then Plain text, saves a .txt file in UTF-8 whenever you need the file itself.

Files it opens

KindExtensions
Plain text.txt, .text
Data.csv, .tsv, .json, .xml, .yml, .sql
Logs and subtitles.log, .srt, .vtt
Settings.ini, .cfg, .conf
Markup and code, as text.md, .html, .css, .js, .ts, .py, .sh, .tex

Every file comes in as text, character for character: a web page shows its tags, a Markdown file its symbols. Files up to 50 MB open; very large ones are easier to work with in parts.

Turn text into a file in one step

  • Text to PDFA .txt file or pasted text as a PDF, with line numbers if you like.
  • Text to WordPlain text as a Word document, hard-wrapped lines joined if you wish.

What the text editor does

  • Line numbers that follow long, wrapped lines
  • Line and column of the cursor in the status bar
  • Find and replace, with match case and whole words
  • Word and character count and reading time; the word count of a selection
  • Tabs, spaces and empty lines kept exactly as typed
  • Reads UTF-8, UTF-16 and older Windows-1252 files; saves UTF-8
  • A monospaced face, so columns of text line up
  • Autosave in your browser, a dark theme and a focus mode

More ways to write

Every editor works on the same documents in this browser: a note started here is in the list there too.

Questions

What is a plain text editor?

A plain text editor changes the characters of a file and nothing else: there are no fonts, no bold and no page layout to carry along. That makes it the right tool for .txt notes, data files, logs and settings files, where formatting would only get in the way.

Which text encodings does it read?

Files with a byte-order mark are read as UTF-8 or UTF-16. Files without one are read as UTF-8 when they are valid UTF-8, and otherwise as Windows-1252, the encoding of many older text files. Downloads are always saved as UTF-8.

Can I turn the line numbers off?

Yes: untick Line numbers above the text. The choice is remembered in this browser. Long lines wrap to the width of the window either way, and the numbers count the lines of the file, not the wrapped rows on screen.

Does it keep tabs, spaces and empty lines?

Yes. What you type or open is stored exactly as it is: tabs stay tabs, runs of spaces and empty lines are kept, and nothing is trimmed. Tab inserts a tab; with several lines selected, Tab and Shift+Tab indent or outdent all of them. Press Esc, then Tab, to move on from the text.

Can I turn plain text into a formatted document?

Yes. Choose ⋯ → Make a formatted copy and the text becomes a new document with one paragraph per line, ready for headings, lists and bold text. The plain-text original stays as it was.
